Dear Guidance Counselor,
I only have two test left to obtain my ged and I want to get on that right away. I was trying to find some practice tests on line but have been unsuccessful and am looking for help from anyone who might know which way to send me. I would really appreciate any kind of help I can get. From Jim

Dear Jim,
Congratulations that you are almost done with your GED testing! It sounds as though you have already put some hard work into this endeavor. I agree that it is indeed a good idea to practice and prepare for the tests. There are many advertisements on the internet, as I am sure you have seen, but most of them are not reliable sites for you. It is important to find a reputable source in order to do your best work.
The GED
The best place to start when you want to know more about the GED in general is at the website by the American Council on Education. They have all the information you will need to take the GED process from beginning to end. For instance, there is a test locater to find a site local to your home, there are sample questions you can try online, links to video tutorials, and also frequently asked questions. The website page which will probably be the most beneficial to you is the one that says “Prepare online for the GED tests”.
What you will find
This website page focuses on GED Testing Service resource materials. The sample questions there in each of the subject areas– language arts reading, language arts writing, math, social studies, and science– will help you get a sense of what is needed. The American Council on Education also lists a few other online resources as well, both fee-costing and free. I strongly suggest you check these out. For instance, the Public Broadcasting Service has a literacy link which offers preparatory questions online for free.
Other places to take practice tests
In addition to online resources, your local library might have some GED practice books. Community colleges and adult education centers sometimes offer preparatory classes for a small cost. One advantage to such classes is you can benefit from the expertise and help of the teacher, as well as to practice with your classmates.
Next steps
There are a few other things for you to know before you take the GED tests. No matter what enticing advertisements you might see, it is not possible to actually take the GED tests themselves online. Any site that tries to convince you to do so is a scam.
Getting a GED credential has been shown to improve your chances of getting a better job, and it can function at most colleges for the pre-requisite high school diploma. You are doing yourself a favor by trying to get this credential. As you have already figured out, the key is to practice, practice, practice.
